Context
The New Seven Wonders of the World campaign was launched in 2000 by Swiss-Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber as a private initiative run by the New7Wonders Foundation, based in Switzerland. The idea was to invite people around the world to choose, through internet and telephone voting, seven human-made monuments as symbolic heirs to the wonders of antiquity. The final round brought together 21 finalists, including the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, and Angkor Wat.
The results were announced on July 7, 2007, at a ceremony held at the Benfica stadium in Lisbon. The winners, in no particular order, were the Great Wall of China, Petra, Christ the Redeemer, Machu Picchu, Chichén Itzá, the Colosseum, and the Taj Mahal. The Pyramids of Giza—among them the Great Pyramid, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing—were withdrawn from the vote and granted honorary candidate status. The vote has no connection with the UNESCO World Heritage List.
